Things I Leaned As A Kid (#35 in a series)
Christmas toys are not made by elves at the North Pole. They are made in factories in places like Hong Kong. If you want to get any more presents, kid, you'll keep your mouth shut.

Shapeways: first online market for 3D fabrication models
You hear about 3D printing here and there, but for the most part it's a bit irrelevant to the average person because fabrication is messy, difficult, and prohibitively expensive. Even dedicated DIYers have to get their stuff custom made. Hopefully that will all change with Shapeways, a new service which bills itself as a sort of Etsy for 3D models.

Creationism as “Science” Moves to the UK. Gets Foothold.
The Press Association: Third of teachers want Creationism — All the press material I’ve seen in England is very carefully worded as if it was orchestrated. How can Adobe make learning ActionScript 3 easier?
As you may have noticed from some of my recent posts (here and here), I have been spending some time lately thinking about the ActionScript 2 to ActionScript 3 transition. I am working on some stuff to make this transition easier (especially for non-developers), but I wanted to make a quick post and get the community’s input. How can we make the transition from ActionScript 2 to ActionScript 3 easier? I am specifically interested in input from anyone who does not consider themselves hardco

Why our customers are smart
I often tell stories about companies who treat their customers or developers as if they were idiots. But that's not to say my own company, the one I started, didn't do this too -- it did. It's human nature, but it's bad human nature, it's self-defeating, it's dysfunctional. When I heard someone say a customer was stupid, I said if that's true we're really fucked. Here's how I reasoned... 1. We have to believe our customers are the smartest people, because they were smart enough to choose the b

Auroralites dog safety collar
A friend recently pointed out a cool gadget to me that deserves a brief mention on this blog. It is a dog safety collar from Auroralites that uses electroluminescent ("EL") technology to provide a long-lived and bright safety light for your night-time walkies. The product is already being used by police, search & rescue, FBI, and other security K-9 teams, and is now also available for civilian use. The collar is shock proof, water resistant and soft, so they won't break teeth. They

Book Review: The Pixar Touch
As part of my life of nerdiness, I’ve attended animation festivals since I was in high school in the late-ish 80s. At Cal (1989-1993), I would work the shows when Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation came to school (it paid $5/hr!). Computers were also (obviously) an interest, and each year one company would produce a computer animated short that was always loved at the festival — Pixar. I was an eager audience member for Toy Story, and have seen every Pixar film, except for

Getting past the self-reflexive beginning
A tweet from Jeff Jarvis: My son says his problem with Twitter is too much Twittering about Twitter. Judging by today, he’s right. And I just added to it. That used to be the case with blogging when it first started. Every other post (including mine) was about blogging. Blog blog blog blog. If you want to get out ahead of the curve when the next new social writing phenomenon happens, be the one who never writes about it. (BTW, I’m dweinberger at Twitter.) [Tags: tic_tac_toe christ

Another resume tip
Are you a software developer applying to a small company? Here’s a tip from someone who has read thousands of resumes. When you’re applying to a startup, or a software company with less than, say, 100 employees, you may want to highlight the Banging Out Code parts of your experience, while deemphasizing the Middle Management parts of your experience. When a startup CTO sees a resume that says things like: Responsible for $30m line of business Architected new ERP platform Managed team

Predictions for CEP in 2009
David Luckham started a complexevents.com discussion on what lies in store for CEP in 2009. We won’t re-create that discussion, but instead look at probably the biggest challenge facing CEP: the terminology! There is nothing wrong or odd with businesses having complex (or abstract) events, and requiring detection of said events in a timely fashion with an appropriate reaction; however,  many many applications already do this in some restricted way or other. So what differentiates CEP tech

Signs of the Times
I took these pictures at the Stanford Shopping Center during the week after Christmas. Money sure talks now… There were a handful of stores without sales signs, but only one didn’t offer discounts and had lots of people in it. :-) We all definitely have our work cut out for ourselves in 2009. As a wise man once said, “Some things need to be believed to be seen.”

When Looking for Answers...Follow the Money
"Follow the money" is a common way experts rationalize human behaviors in economics, politics, crime and many other areas. This undeniable truth becomes even more relevant in an economic environment characterized by gloom and pessimism, such as the one we are currently experiencing. It is with this in mind that we are proud to announce that in the midst of one of the most difficult economic scenarios in history, JackBe received $5 Million in additional funding from its existing investors to expan

Permission Structures
Oddly enough, the Andre's description of how he'd like Flickr's permission structure to work is the way it originally worked, and, frankly, didn't work. It was based on the relationships we'd developed for Game Neverending: Acquaintance, Friend, Best Friend, Soulmate -- there was another level between Best Friend and Soulmate (or Friend and Best Friend) but now I don't remember what it was. Orkut, in their original version, did a similar concentric friends circle and we knew it wouldn't be long
